Leonardo was born in the village of Anchiano.  He was the illegitimate son of a notary and a peasant.

Leonardo is apprenticed to Andrea De Verrocchio at the age of fifteen.  The workshop of Verrocchio produced many of the leading Italian artists and craftsman of the era.  Leonardo helped his teacher with many projects such as the Baptism of the Christ.

Leonardo experiments with a mixture of paints to create The Last Supper in 1495 on the wall of the Santa Maria delle Grazie convent in Milan.  The mixture proved to be a mistake because it faded and ran because of the conditions around the wall.

In 1502 Leonardo began to work as a Military engineer.  His love for science and building things were put to good use here.  After this point in his life his desire to invent and build rivaled his desire to draw and paint.

The famous Mona Lisa was commissioned in 1502 but never finished partly because of his growing interest in science.
